A new album by the Australian hip-hop act Rain, which will be released on May 10, is the latest in a string of new releases for the group, which has also released two albums and a song each of the last three years.
The album, titled Rain, was announced by producer Jay-Z and singer Mandy Moore on the same day that they shared a teaser of the music video for the new track, titled I’m Ready.
“I’m Ready, and I’m here to take you on a journey of what it means to be ready,” Moore says, before she and rapper Talib Kweli join the duo to play the track.
Rain, whose real name is James Earl Young, began recording in 2015 as a side project to a rapper named Mandy.
When Young met Mandy, he thought she was an “all-American girl from Perth”, according to the song’s lyrics.
“I thought she’d be cool,” Young told The Daily Telegraph in February.
He thought she could be a good fit for him, so they teamed up.
On the album, the duo share their musical styles with a sense of playful rap, hip-hopping and storytelling.
“It’s not a commercial release, but the song was released as a video, and that video has been watched millions of times,” Moore told The Australian.
Moore and Kweli have collaborated on a number of projects, including the single I’m a Little Bit Bored, which debuted at No.1 on the Australian pop chart and peaked at No:1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart in 2017.
In 2018, Rain released an album called The Last Song.
Mandy Moore, who will be on stage at this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival, told The Guardian last year that the album was “about trying to push ourselves to our limit” and “challenge ourselves”.
“When I wrote that song, I was going through a lot of issues, and my self-esteem was really low, and the only thing I could think about was, ‘I’m not good enough, I’m not worthy of this,'” she said.
She said she had a lot to prove and “thought I could make people believe in me”.
“So I thought if I was gonna do this, I should do it on my own terms.”
